Manawatu Drainage Board

MONTHLY MEETING HELD The monthly meeting of the Manawatu Drainage Board was held on Monday, Mr. P. G. Mildpn presiding. Also present were Messrs W. E. Thomas, H. R. Green, J. Collis, F. J. Russell, R. Tanner and D. Prouse. The overseer (Mr. M. Wilson) reported that good progress was being made with the improvement work on Burke’s drain, approximately 40 chains having been completed. Tho cleaning of Main drain had been completed, while approximately 40 chains of Whiskey croek drain had been finished. The majority of the contract draining had been commenced, fair progress having been mado. Tho clerk (Mr. N. I. Nielsen) reported that at April 12, 1937, the debit balance had been £249 Is 7d, and at present it was £435 13s 7d. Wages for No. 5 scheme workers to bo refunded by the Unemployment Board amounted to £lB2 ss. Of the 1936-37 rates unpaid (£354 10s lOd) a further £7 13s lOd had beeu paid and of the rates in the previous three years (£74 16s 4d) £3 12s 5d had come in during tho month, leaving a total of £4lB 0s lid yet to como to hand. Mr. Thomas reported that a request (previously received) for drainage near Mr. T. Lawton’s property was for a drain to be dug on the roadway, on Ivai Iwi road.—The board decided to h' l tho matter in abeyance. The board passed a motion expressing intention to levy general rates for the 1937-38 financial year totalling £3557 is Bd. The total last year was £3348 Os 4d. The Bank of New Zealand forwarded approval of an overdraft limit of £3500 for the current financial year.—The clerk said he did not think there was any possibility of a higher limit being required, and the letter was received. Mr. Russell reported that there was a good deal of water in one portion of Mitchell’s drain, and the chairman said that at another p~int in the system there was less water, indicating that the recent rain had not been spread evenly over tho board’s area. Tho chairman gave an undertaking that the reason for the high level of water in the drain referred to would be investigated.
