Bromwich, replacing McGrath, who is iu bed with a sore throat, defeated Keyes (Mexico), 6—2, 6—2, 7—5. In the first set four games went to deuce, iu the second set there were lontr ml- 1 lies, uromwicn winning two love games, and in the third, Reyes’ effei* tive backhand took tho last game to douce five times. Quist defeated Tapia (Mexico), 6— 2, 6 —4, 4—6, C—3. Quist won the first four games and Tapia the fifth and seventh. In the second set Tapia won the first two, Quist the next three and Tapia the sixth and seventh. In the third sot Tapia won the first three, Quist the fourth, Tapia the fifth after two deuces, Quist the sixth, seventh and eighth and Tapia tho ninth and tenth. At thirty in the fourth set, Tapia serving won the first, love, Quist the next three, Tapia tho fifth, Quist the sixth, love, Tapia the seventh, and Quist the eighth. Quist was in difficulty at times through the high bouncing ball resulting in net fault«McGRATH IN SANATORIUM. SAN FRANCISCO, May 2. In the Davis Cup singles, Parker (U.S.A.) defeated Nakano (Japan), 6 —o, 6 —3, 6—2, and Budge defeated Yainagishi, 6—2, 6—2, 6—4. A Mexico City message says:— McGrath has been taken to Cowdray sanatorium because of throat infection. Mr Sproule, who is remaining in Mexico City, said he hoped McGrath would recover in a few days. Crawford, Quist and Bromwich left for San Antonio, Texas, where they will play exhibition games and await word of McGrath. A latter message states that Mr. Sproule said: “McGrath has fever and is feeling depressed but his condition is not alarming.”
