From Our Own Correspondent. School Committee Present at th© monthly meeting were Messrs M. E. Knudsen (chairman), J. Stuart (secretary), L. -Ncwcombe, A. Harrowfield, D. Cresswell and H. Wood (head teacher). On account of the paralysis epidemic it was decided to postpone the school fancy dress ball. The infant teacher's (Miss G. O'Brien) resignation was received with regret. The head teacher reported that Anzac lessons had been given iu the school on Friday by th© teachers and this year no special speaker was obtuined. It was decided to mane enquiries regarding th© purchasing of a new whoel-barrow for the school. The committee nas secured a quick-print duplicator, and they decided to purchase i gross of Coronauoii badges for distribution to th© children and also to procure a basketbaii for the girls and a football for th© boys. Borne metal is to be obtained with the idea of filling in a nolo in front of the boys’ shed. Tlie top-dressing cf the top tennis court is to be underUiKen after the winter is over. More books are to be purchased lor the library. -Minor repairs necessary to the school building ar© to b© seen to. Institute Social and Dance There was a large attendance at the social and dance neld by th© Women’s institute although there was a noticeable dent, welcomed tlio assembly and announced tho i icins. Mesdames Rix and Kiddle opened Uie programme with a Piano duet, responding to an encore. A nappy caoice. ' Voice of the Old Englisli Chon;,” by -Hisses J.and it. Wood, called for an encore, their seeund vocal number being "Till W© Meet Again.” Miss I'. iverngan was a popular performer with two elocutionary numbers. Bongs by MiBaker called lor applause. Later he delighted his audience with a sketch enuiied ’ Blowing out a Candle. Mr. Lindergreen iound favour with his yodelliifg songs. Tlie final, a piayette presented by the Pohangma Drama Circle, was a fitting conclusion to a nappy programme. Tnoso artists who acquitted themselves so well were Mesdames orgias, j. Hoar, Misses J. Sinclair ana D. Watson. Supper was handed round by the Women's Institute members, after which professional music was supplied for an old-time dance. Amongst those dancing were: Mesdames Morris, blue and silver; Fountain, black and floral; Eagle, mulberry crepe; Uhrboin. black georgette; if. It. Smith, black georgette and coatee; Orgias, brown inarocuin; J. Mour, red and white floral; Misses Vautier, creme floral; M. Speedy, blue embossed with silver; 11. Gore, pink and silver; S. Coutts The knitted sox donated by Mrs Culpan were t *? re * As a result of tlie function the funds of tho Women's Institute will benefit considerably. Basketball The newly-formed basketball club was at home to two teams on Saturday and a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon’s play was indulged in it was very gratifying to note tlie presence of a number of interested spectators. The first match played was against Bunnythorp© and the teams takng the field were: Bunnythorpe, Msses B. Gee, B. Pederson. T. Koehler, N. Rosvall, o. Weastell. J. Sinclair, A. and <_>. Sinclair, D. Clevely; Whakaroilgo, Misses M. Hodgson, M and W. Vautier, J. and L. Smith, J. and H. Wood, L. Speedy and M. Radomski. Miss M. Hodgson opened up the scoring with a good shot and thereafter play was fairly even. The half-time score was 10—6 in favour of th© visitors. In the second spell tlie local girls more than held their own and Ui© result of the match was a win for Bunnythorpe by 17 to 15 gaols. For the visitors points were scored 'Vts follows: T. Koehler 6. B. Gee 6 and D. Clevely 5. For Whakarongu J. Smith scored 7, W. Vautier 4, and M. Hodgson 4. Miss Vautier refereed. The second match was one against a team of Technical Old Girls: Misses V. Straker, D. Berkahn. V. Gillies, M. Purdim. 1-. Lyall, J. Christian. A. Dorset. P. Morris, D. Foreman. D. Rat- • •lift'e. Tho local girls in their gold frocks with purple monograms were Misses C. Vautier. T. Ncwcombe, V. Puklowski. H. and P. Christiansen, 11. Harrowfield, I. Johansort, <:. Jones and J. Harvey. Miss D. Berkahn, for (he visitors, potted tho first goal and tho half-time score was 9—3 in Old Girls' favour. Both sides played consistently until the whistle blew th© score finally being 17—7. Points were scored by T. O. G. as follows: Misses D. Berkahn 9, N. Straker 5. V. Gillies 3; and for Whakarongo, Misses I. Johanson 3. U. Christiansen 3, and V. Puklowski l. Miss Vautier acted as referee for th© second match. At the conclusion of play cheers were called on all sides, and aftertea was dispensed. Next Saturday the first team will journey to Bunnythorpe to attempt to turn the tables bn their opponents, while the second team will play a match on th© home courts. She has been staying in New Plymouth. With the changeable weather, the district has experienced a good deal of rain lately. Influenza colds aro very prevalent. The cuclir© match to have been played aaginst Ashhurst has, on account of tlie epidemic, been postponed for a week. The district regrets to hear of the earlv departure of the school’s infant mistress. Miss G. O’Brien has held that position for seven years and her absence will b© keenly felt. Mushroom lovers have apparently given up hop© fo having this favourite this season as there is no sign of the fungus about. Th© local creek has been very swollen with tho continual rain this week.
