Germans in South-west Africa

CAPETOWN, April 5. The uermaa Minister has presented a protest to General Hertzog against tho anti-Nazi proclamation cabled on, April 3rd, which declares that it must be regarded as a combative measure against Germans in South West Africa. He refers to the report of the South West Africa Commission as producing unproved allegations on which the proclamation was based. A German Noto denies that Germans were interfering with institutions in South West Africa, and adds that the German Government, which has repeatedly urged elimination of the tension by a mutual understanding, now considers it to be its duty to raise a warning and ask the Union Government to take steps to prevent serious damage in carrying out the proclamation. A cable message from Pretoria, dated April 3rd, stated that a proclamation directed against Naziism in South West Africa and recruitment for the German Army or auxiliary forces prohibited all )ut British subjects from participating in the activities of “declared public bodies or political organ isations/’ in tho mandated territory. It also prohibited British subjects taking the oath of allegiauce to any ruler except the King and to any Government except the South African or tc any foreign political organisation The ban was stated to have created alarm and indignation in Berlin, where Government circles declared that they were taking up the matter with the South African Government immedi • tely.
