He Wrote “Naughty” Letters to Girl
BUT ‘ DARLING IDA” WAS DETECTIVE A young mau who thought that he had bccu writing to an amorous schoolgirl found thut the replies had actually como from a Scotland Yard detective. The story was told when William S. C. Walker, aged 36, property owner, of Bina gardens, Kensington, was sentenced at Bow street to six mouths’ imprisonment for sending by post an improper postcard. On October 28, said Mr Vincent Evans (prospecuting), a postal packet was received at a well-known girls’ school in Buckinghamshire, addressed to “The Senior Pupil.” It was opened on instructions of the headmistress, and inside was a picture and a little story, which were beth improper. They were forwarded to Scotland Yard. As a result, on November 5 Chief Inspector Burt put this advertisement in a newspaper: — Andrew.—Awaiting further letters. — Ida. On November 9 a further postal packet, also improper, arrived at the school. With it was a note marked “Confidential,” which said: “Now, Ida, be an angel and put another message in, giving your surname. Andrew hopes you will be entertained by better stories in future.” So the chief inspector put in another notice: Andrew. Enjoyed letters. Burt. On November II a further letter was received reading: “My Dear Ida, — How truly sweet of you to bo such a darling and give me the information.” On December 7 a further letter was sent, enclosing £1 and suggesting a meeting. On December 14 the police put in a further advertisement: Andrew. Thanks. Address risky. Write J. S. £., 4604 , E.C.4. To that they received a reply and a stamped addressed envelope, giving the name John Wilson, c/o a Knightsbridge store. A reply was sent in the envelope, and a farther letter was received: “My dear Ida, —Something, some premonition of danger, possibly my guardian angel, warned me not to go to collect the letter, which is waiting me at the prescribed destination.” But as a result of further inquiries the police eventually located Walker in Kensington.
