“There is not enough carrying in (a certain country township) to keep a wheelbarrow busy. And what business you do get, you cannot get your money for it out of the people there. I don’t mind if I am not licensed for that area.” Thus a candid applicant before the No. 2 Transport Licensing Authority at its sitting in Palmerston North yesterday.
During the week ended March 13, 7172 tickets were issued at the Palmerston North Railway Station, as against 337 G for the corresponding period of 1930, an increase of 4096. Revenue last week aggregated £1027 as compared with £846 for the similar period last year. The number of sheep handled was 1049 compared with 486, whilst general merchandise last week amounted to 3555 tons as compared with 698 tons.
The following officers were elected at the second annual meeting of the Palmerston North Friendly Societies’ In door Bowls Association when the president (Mr. E. W. Drake) presided over a good attendance of members. Patron, Mr. J. A. Nash; president, Mr. E. W. Drake; vice-presidents, Messrs. A. Dawick and M. Bowler; committee, Messrs. R. Stewart, W. Mears, B. Fisher, 11. Freeman and R. Scales; sec-retary-treasurer, Mr. A. J. Hunt; assistant secretary, Miss Underwood; auditor, Mr. G. Edwards; selectors, Messrs. M. Bowler, A. Dawick and W. Mears.
