The superintendent of Smithfield Market, in his annual report, draws attention to the fact tmat Londoners live principally on chilled beef and frozen mutton, showing 11 the dependence on overseas countries.” The chief suppliers to Smithfield in 1936 were:— Argentine, 36.1 per cent.; New Zealand, 17.8 per cent.; England and Wales, 17.2 per cent.; and Australia, 10.3 per cent.
