Two New Athletic Records at Napier
DRISCOLL AND MURAKOSO. From Our Own Correspondent. NAPIER, March 17. The special athletic meeting run under the auspices of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, for the purpose of giving Hawke’s Bay people an opportunity of seeing the two Japanese athletes, Alurakoso (distance runner), and Togami (jumper), attracted a very large crow’d to AlcLean Park. The spectators who expected great things at the sports meeting last nigbt were in no way disappointed. The meeting opened brilliantly, for the New Zealand, amateur champion walker, laa Driscoll, not only lowered the longstanding two-miles walk record of 14 min. 2 04-ssecs., put up by A. Brady in 1596, but fractured the record by no less than 15secs., Driscoll’s time being 13miu. 57 3-ssce. When the time was announced, the applause which greeted the performance could have been heard a very long distance away. Later in the evening, the Japanese distance runner, Alurakoso, made an attempt on the tw r o-miles record of 9 min. 20 J-ssecs., held by Randolph Rose, and ho too was successful in hia attempt, running the distance in 9mm. 19 4-s»ocs., thus beating the previous record by 2-6ths of a second. The other Japanese athlete, Togami, won both the hop, step and jump ami high jump, but in neither event did he get anywhere near New Zealand record figures. Togami, however, was handicapped by the fading light, and also is not at his best in jumping off grass. During the evening Air. Mclvor also presented Aliss Roua Tong, of Hastings, with a handsome silver cup fn recognition of her victory in the women’s hurdles championship at the New Zealand amateur athletic championships at Auckland in which event she established a fresh record, beating the previous record (her own) by 4-sths of a sec end.
