Judge’s Comments on Manawatu Pork Exports
“CARCASES LEFT LITTLE TO BE DESIRED. ” Accompanied by the judge’s comments, the results of the special export class for porkers at the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association’s Spring iShow, the entries having been judged in London, have now come to hand, a copy haviug been forwarded to the association by the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board. 4 ‘Before giving a criticism of each individual pig, let me say that I consider that for quality, general make and ideal proportions, all seven carcases left little or nothing to be desired,” stated the judge, Mr D. C. Messent, managing director of Messrs D. C. Messent and Sons, Ltd., Smithfield. “The dressing and general condition were perfect. 1 have placed the carcases in the following order: — * 4 l.—Cheltenham Dairy Company (Makiuo). An ideal pig of good leugtn of loin and full in flesh. A beautifully proportioned carcase. “2.—M. J. Kriven (Awapuni). A magnificent pig. No butcher could wish for a better porker. “3.—E. P. Nielsen (Tiakitahuna). A magnificent pig. If a- trifle heavier than those taking first and second places, this carcase was equally meritorious.
“4. —W. A. Davison (Bongotea). A truly first-class porker of excellent shape, very fleshy with a good length of loin.
“5. —Cheltenham Dairy Company. A pig of real merit, of good length of loin and in every way well proportioned. 4 6.—W. A. Davison (Rongotea). A very good pig. A most suitable article for the London trade.
4 4 7.—W. A. Davison. A split carcase of gentral excellence. Very full of meat, but perhaps a trifle out of proportion across the shoulders.” Prior to being slaughtered, frozen and shipped to London through the Meat Board, the pigs in the export class were judged alive at the Show, and the following was the result:—W. A. Davison (entry placed seventh in London) 1, E. P. Nielsen (not sent to Londonn) 2, E. P. Nielsen (entry not sent to London) 3.
