Residents Ask Council For Tar-sealed Streets

SEVERAL REQUESTS REFERRED TO COMING ESTIMATES. Several requests for tar-sealing of streets were before the City Council last evening, and were referred to the estimates for tho coming year. The residents of Worcester street presented a petition that Worcester street from College street to Ferguson street be tar-sealed. —Referred to coming year's estimates. Park Road Deputation. Representing the ratepayers and residents of Park road, a deputation waited upon the council requesting the tar-sealing of Park road between Cook street and Fitzherbert avenue. A number of women were present in the deputation, whose spokesmen were Messrs L. M. Abraham aud J. B. Gerrand. Mr. Abraham emphasised that Park road was a portion of tho “Esplanade circuit," traversed by thousands of visitors annually. The route was in need of tar-sealing from a municipal as well as a residential viewpoint. Rugby grounds and golf links were being opened up, and a major housing scheme was about to commence in Park road; these considerations were sufficient to establish the priority of the route for tar-sealing. The dust storms taking flight from the surface of Park road were a serious thing in the lives of the women of the street, said Mr. Gerrand, who said that it was hoped this year's sealing estimates would include Park road.

A good caso had been established, said the Mayor before tho deputation retired. Like the ratepayers, he hoped Park road would be among tho streets scaled in the coming year. The matter must of course bo referred to the estimates, which would be brought down within a few weeks. The council resolved in this direction. On the recommendation of the works committee, it was resolved that the tarsealing of Botanical road between Main and Featherstone streets requested by the Takaro Progressive Association, be considered when next year’s estimates are being dealt with, and that the ratepayers of Stanley avenue be informed that their request for the tar-sealing of the northern end of Stanley avenue has been referred to next year's estimates.
