From Our Own Correspondent i School Matters. £ Mr W. It. McKenzie presided over a _ meeting of the Foxton District High I School committee. Also present were € .Messrs M. E. Ferreau, W. M. Thomas, L. Fletcher, 15. Titcombe and the secretary (Mr 1. \V. Mud ford;. Mr T. Kane, headmaster, was also in attendance. The 1 chairman expressed regret at the serious I illness of Mr J. K. Horn blow, and the secretary was Instructed to write to Mrs Horn blow conveying sympathy with her m her anxiety and expressing every good wish for Mr Hornblow’s recovery. The chairman reported, on the commencement of the work on the school playing area by ] the i’ublic Works Department, it was decided to forward a letter of appreciation to the Wanganui Education Hoard. Owing to the late commencement of the school this year it was decided that the question of having a school picnic this year be ; held in abeyance. The resignation of Mr J. T. Edwards was received with sincere ; regret and it was decided to forward him J a letter of appreciation and wishing him every success in his new sphere of ac- ' tivities. A letter was received from the J Parents’ Association in connection with . radio installation at the school, and the , secretary was instructed to obtain quotes. < it was decided to accept the headmaster’s offer to supply a plan and estimates to reerect the trellis fence in Jarrah and to endeavour to procure a supply of manuka for repairing the manuka trellis fence..Licensing Committee. Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., presided over the quarterly meeting of the Manawatu Licensing Committee which was held in the Courthouse on Wednesday. The police report being favourable in each case, the following transfers were granted:—Grand Hotel, Devin, front W. G. Hundle to K. M. Hickson; Criterion Hotel, Bulls, from C. C. Price to A. H. Burt; Kangitikei Hotel, „ Bulls, from G. V. Jackson to C. C. Price. The chairman commented on the fact that the alterations requested to be carried out to the Criterion Hotel at Bulls at the last annual meeting had not yet been effected. Counsel for the proprietor said that plans and specifications had been prepared ana the work was to bo put in hand immediately. The chairman said that unless the work was completed by next annual meeting of the committee there was a risk that the license would be held up. Personal and General. Mr and Mrs D. Kingston, of Wellington, have taken up their residence in Foxton, where Mr Kingston is under engagement to Mr G. F. Smith. Mr Kingston is a keen —* cricketer and for a number of years was a member of the Midland Cricket Club, Wellington. He is also a tennis enthusiRev. Father Foley, of Masterton, will be taking over St. Mary’s Parish, Foxton, at the end of the present month. Rev. Father Rohan has already left for Pa tea. At tho Methodist Conference just concluded at Auckland, Rev. Bernard M. Chrystall, a son of Mr and Mrs J. Chrystall, of Lady’s Mile, Foxton. was one of the six men who were ordained to the full work of tho ministry. Mr Chrystall’s local friends will note with pleasure his remarkable development during recent years and leaders of his church predict a very successful future for him, th 3 thought being freely expressed that ho will become one of tho leading ministers. Rev. Chrystall has been appointed to Devonporl, Auckland. At tlie recent Methodist Conference in Auckland, Rev. R. Grice, of Rawene, was appointed to the Foxton charge In place of Rev. C. W. Brown, who has been transferred to Gonville, Wanganui. Rev. W. MacDonald, late Methodist minister of Foxton and recently of Masterton, has been transferred to Nightcaps, Southland. The roll number at the primary department of the Foxton District High School when it re-opened on Monday morning, was higher than, it has been for many years, the number of pupils enrolled being 573. The number of pupils enrolled at the secondary department was 53. Highway Improvements. The initial work in connection with the survey of the Foxt.on-Beach highway has been coompleted by Mr Dunstan, surveying engineer, who is now engaged in preparing the plans. Provision is to be made for widening and easing two bad bends on the road, that known as the gum tree corner near Air C. Edwards' residence, and the next in the direction of the beach where the road turns to the west again. J Late Mr S. C. ingram. The funera' of the late Mr Ingram took place at Foxton cn Tuesday afternoon and was largely attended, there being a large muster of returned soldiers, each of whom wore a red poppy which was cast into the grave at the conclusion of the service. Rev. E. W. Burgyi conducted the services at tfye house and graveside, and the pall-bearers were Messrs W. Howe, W. Young, C. Quarterman, W. Nye and J. Burns, all returned men. The Last Post was sounded by Sergeant-Bugler B. J. Walls. Tho casket was covered with the Union Jack, and the floral tokens were particularly numerous and beautiful and bore silent testimony to the high esteem iri which the deceased gentleman was held. Bowling. The final round of the Triangular Shield contest is to be held on the Foxton green on Saturday. As usual, Levin, and Shannon clubs will be represented by two rinks each, and Foxton will find the necessary four rinks to meet them. The following members are requested to attend the green not later than 1.45 p.ni. on Saturday: J. L. Christie, J. Dayman, R. Haydock, W. Howe, E. Huntley. J. McKnight, S. Mattar, J. Newth, W. Nye. M. E. Ferreau, R. Ranglheuea, F. Robinson, Jas. Ross, G. Scadden, J. M. Thomson, W. M. Thomas, W. Trueman and F. Woods.
