From Our Own Correspondent. Sports Postponed. A general meeting of tho Sandon Sports Club was held on Wednesday evening, when the president, Mr A. K. Drew presided. Other members present were Messrs C. E. Eglinton, D. G. Warner, A. Kilpatrick. G. J. Arnott, J. W. Beattie, R. Oppatt, K. M. Pearce, A. Sanson, I . Pearce, K. Henson, W. Drummond, W. J. Jenkins, and the hon. secertary. Mr S. L. Orr. An apology was received from Mr J. C. Fagan. At the last meeting a committee consisting of Messrs A. Sanson, A. K. Drew, K. M. Pearce and S. E. Orr was set up to visit ail the schools in the district to ascertain what support the club would have if the sports were held on March 20. Each member reported on the impressions they had obtained, and it was revealed that four schools would be represented in the Hornblow Shield, three in the McKelvie and one in the Fagan-Hen-son. It was explained that this position was caused through the date clashing with school picnics and other sporting events arranged for the same day. A general discussion ensued regarding the advisability of holding the sports or postponing them to a later date. A resolution moved by Mr Orr, and seconded by Mr Warner that owing to the unfortunate circumstances the sports be abandoned for this year. An amendment moved by Mr K M. Pearce and seconded by Mr Eglinton’, tliat another referendum be Taken to obtain the opinion of the schools if the sports are held on April 37. was carried. In speaking to the motion the mover stated that he was very disappointed that it was not possible to obtain sufficient entries if the sports were held on March 20 and considered that if they were held next month the club would be leaving it too late in the year, and thought it would interfere with school work. Mr Pearce differed from the previous speaker’s view and said he felt sure that it would be possible to obtain as many entries as last year but thought that a letter should be written to the schools to ascertain if they would support the function. Messrs Drew, Sanson, Eglinton and Jenkins concurred with Mr Pearce’s view. Mr C. E. Eglinton stated that he thought the time was ripe for a variation to be madei n tho programme so that it would be more attractive to the public. He mentioned tnat it would be possible to obtain a team of whippets providing good prizes were offered. Mr Sanson stated that the club was doing a great work and should continue with tho children’s sports. If they wore to hold horso events, cycle races and adult races again it would be necessary to set another day aside for such a meet-

Mr K. Pearce said the public were of opinion that our sports consisted of onlyfiat events and were not interesting, and favoured introducing more field events in the programme. Mr W. J. Jenkins asked wliat was the idea of the sports., He was of opinion that it was a day out for the children, and so long as we maintained the present patronage that was all that was required because the club was not a moneymaking concern. He said the introduction of the ball games and hurdle events last year proved popular with the public and if more field events were added to the programme it would assist to relieve the monotony.. The chairman stated that he had re ceived Miss Aileen Nix’s cud for the Ju yards girls’ championship event and said he was veery pleased vvitii the spirit in which this cup had been presented. He read a card that Miss Nix had enclosed, which read as follows: “Hoping the winner has as much pleasure from her win as I did from mine.” Mr Drew said that this was a very fine spirit and showed that our sports have had one particularly good “sporj” competing. The secretary reported that he had interviewed several of the Highland dancer? at the Oroua Downs Sports and thought more entries could be obtained if more prize money was offered as he had already had enquiries from Hawke’s Bay, Marton, Palmerston North and Wanganui, n was decided that a committee consisting of the president, secretary, Mr G. J. Arnott 'and Mr J. Stewart bo set up to go into the matter ard submit a report to the next meeting. A meeting oi the programme committee was held after the ordinary meeting and several additional field events were suggested for Uio programmes.
