Admitting that he had received cables stating he was liable to imprisonment if he marries Hon. Jessica Freeman-Mitford, Esmond Romilly cabled the News-Chronicle saying: “Having decided to get married we shall continue trying to achieve this. Threats of imprisonment will make no difference. We both regard marriage mainly as a convenience and it does not mean the end of the world if we are unable to marry.’’ A cable from London on March 1 stated:— The Foreign Office has asked the British Consular officials at Bilbao and Bordeaux to endeavour to trace the Hon. Jessica Freeman-Mitforl, aged 19, daughter of Lord Redesdalo, and Esmond Romilly, aged 18, a nephew of Mr Winston Churchill. The officials were notified that the couple were under age and might be contemplating matrimony. The pair are cousins. Romilly recently was fighting with the international column in Madrid. The gir; was believed by iher parents to be staying at Dieppe but it was discovered that she had left there. She was last: heard of from Bayonne. The Bordeaux correspondent of tho Daily Herald says the girl is working with the Spanish Government’s press bureau at Bilbao. A friend said the couple seemed very much in love and were planning to marry. Both are full of enthusiasm foT the fight against Fascism.
