Women’s Institutes

HALCOMBE Mrs W. Davies presided over a good attendance at the February meeting At the opening of the meeting, members stood a moment in silence as a mark of respect to two of our members, Mrs Blows and Miss Gladys James, who have passed away. A motion of sympathy with Mrs Reid who has lost her mother was also passed. Greetings were extended to all by the president. Several visitors were welcomed and one new member, Mra Jensen, was enrolled. Apologies for absence were received from Mrs Masters and Mrs Brett. Members who sent articles for exhibition at the Feilding Show were thanked. Arrangements for the birthday party were discussed and the date decided upon was Thursday, April 8. After business had been dealt with a pleasant time was spent in an informal way. Two competitions were both won by Miss Martin, an Auckland visitor, and ex-member of the institute. Mrs Dudding entertained with an elocutionary item. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses Misses Field (2) and Noffke. AOKAUTERE The mouthly meeting of the local women's institute was held on Wednesday last. Owing to the extended school holidays, thre was only a small attendance of members. The president (Mrs Gilshnan) extended a welcome to all, and announced that nominations for the new committee would be called for at the annual meeting next month. There was no correspondence to be dealt with. Mrs> H. Chower gave an interesting demonstration of Ooskct making from Chinese matting and later explained several lace stitches from a specimen piece of embroidery. Airs Chower was accorded- a hearty vole of thanks. The monthly competition for “the best .fiower in my garden" was judged by popular vote, the winners being Mrs It. Bcott and Mrs Chower first equal in the seniors and Miss L Anderson first m the juniors. The hostesses for the after*yjou were Mesdames Kristenscn and W. field and Miss I. Anderson.
