Miss Jean Batten, noted New Zealand flier, left by the Awatea for Sydney this week accompanied by her mother. Mrs R. B. Henderson, Fitzlierbert avenue, has had her sister, Mrs H. A. Burling, as her guest for a few days. Mrs Linda Bennett and her smaP daughter have returned to Palmerston North after holidaying at Foxton beach. Miss Isabel Shirley, of Morrinsville, who has been on a visit to her cousin, Miss Edna Bowater, of Feilding, left on Tuesday to stay for a while at Stratford. Mrs B. Coates, manageress of Messrs Collinson and Cunninghame’s tearooms, has returned to Palmerston North after an enjoyable holiday spent in Rotorua and Napier. The only woman member in New Zealand of a Rotary club, Miss Eileen Comyns, of Wanganui, has had to resign her position 1 as honorary pianist on account of ill-health. Another society which will sadly miss her services is the Amateur and Dramatic Society. Miss Comyns has filled these positions for many years. Regret has been expressed by both societies. A London correspondent states that a marriage has been arranged, and will shortly take place, between Francis Charles Chichester, the well-known Wellington airman, younger son of Rev. Charles and Mrs, Chichester, of Exton, Devon, and Sheila Mary Craven, of Sloane Avenue Mansions, 5.W.3, young er daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Craven, of Belle Eau Park, Notts, and Coin, St. Aldwyns, Glos. On a six week’s visit to New Zealand, Miss D. Playford, of Newcastle, arrived in Auckland early this month. This visitor has gained distinction in! her chosen line of work, for she wag the championship winner last September of the first hair-dressing exhibition held in Sydney. Miss Playford and her mother gained awards in each section, the tall silver championship cup going eventually to the daughter, with her mother in second place. It is hoped that Mrs E. Seaward, an organiser for Townswomen’s Guilds tn England and former president of the Ealing Guild, will attend the meeting of the Palmerston North Townswomen’s Guild on Monday next. Mrs Seaward is sepnding a leisurely holiday in New Zealand and has been Visiting in thq north, but expects to be in Palrqerston North on Monday. Miss Jerome Spear cer, 0.8. E. (Rissington), founder of : the Women’s Institutes and Townswomen’s Guilds in New Zealand, will be the speaker at this meeting.
