Question of Fee for Car Inspection

MANAWATU TO WAIT RESULTS. 4 * Some car owners would be quite ready to spend five shillings to know that the other driver’s car was all right, ’ ’ commented Mr N. H. Mackie, president of the Automobile Association (M&nawatu), when the executive last evening discussed the matter of the compulsory inspection of all cars, which is to be insisted on by the Government. From the North Island Motor Union came advice that it was the Government’s intention to institute motor inspection depots as was dose m America, and that the present arrangement for garages and others were to be warrant-issuing authorities, was merely temporary. The fee fixed for garages was five shillings, but when the Government set up its own depots, the charge, it was hoped, would not be more than 2s 6d. Another intimation before the meeting, however, said the garages would not be charging more than 2s 6d. Mr ti. G. Rosv&ll said the 2s 6d fee might be all right if garages knew how much would be required of them. Some cars would take a week to correct all their faults. The secretary, Mr S. L McKenzie, pointed out that the fee was for inspection and not adjustments. Mr Rosvall contended that a central inspection depot was what was wanted. From there motorists could go to the garages with a note 'as to what was required and the time of the-garages would be saved. The executive took no action, preferring to see how things worked out.
