Gambling in a Big Way

AUCKLAND, Last Night. ‘‘There has been a pretty big business going on here uud it is looked on as oue of the worst gambling dens in Auckland at the present time," said Detec-Uve-Bergeant AlcHugli, when Sylvester Pickett, aged 33, labourer, one of three men arrested in tho raid on the Reservoir billiard saloon, Great North road, on Saturday ufteruoou, appeared in the Police Court on a charge of assisting iu the management of a common gaming house. The Detective-Bergeant abided that numerous complaints had been received about the premises. Young men mostly on sustenance, were being encouraged to go there and a lot of drinking was going on. A number of empty bottles were found during the raid. Stating that he must take notice of the police report and accused's previous character, the Magistrate said he must be fined substantially. A month would be allowed to pay a line of £SO provided he reported twice weekly to the police.
