Large Sum Involved In Theft Charge

ACCUSED ARRESTED IN AUSTRALIA Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Fob. 15. i Fourteen charges of theft involving .'•urns of money totalling over £M2O {were preferred against William Wallaco 'McClelland, sharebroker, in the Supreme Court this morning, McClelland pleaded not guilty. Mr Justice Northcroft presided. McClelland had been for some years u licensed sharebroker in Christchurch, said Mr Brown for the Crown Prosej cutor, but for some time he hud been going round the country purporting to bo selling shares, and it was out of those activities that the charges arose. McClelland would extract money, undertaking to purchase specified shares. Finding that they wore getting no satisI faction, two of tho people sued him in j the civil Court. In those eases he ullowed judgment to go against him by default, showing that he should have returned the money. Other pooplo grow 1 suspicious and handed the matter to the police. It was then found that Uc- * (.Holland had left the country and was in Australia. De was arrested by the Australian police.
