SPORTS AT OROUA DOWNS

Memorable Fixture Despite Unfavourable Weather SATURDAY’S PROGRAMME WAS MORE ATTRACTIVE THAN EVER At breakfast time on Saturday morning steady rain was falling in Palmerston North, and an hour later it wa3 coming down in torrents and as if it would go on for the rest of the day. The betting was a guinea to a gooseberry that there would be no sports at Oroua Downs. At 10 a.m. the news was broadcast that the Oroua Downs Sports Club intended to carry on, and although few people could have been optimistic enough to believe that there was a chance of the weather taking up, the tion that the sports were going to be held was enough for most of them, and cars, well laden with passengers, were driven to the Oroua Downs sports ground, the scene of many happy days.

Tho weather was not so bad, except for showers, some of them heavy, and the programme consisting of horse and athletic events, cycle races, trotting races, a baby show, cooking, and last but by no means least, the national dancing, was put through with efficiency and despatch. The attendance was remarkably good and everyone spent a thoroughly enjoyable day. Among those who were present was tho member for tho district,

Hunter, M.l*., who, at a suitable juncture, presented tho prizes. Before doing so he complimented tho club on the arrangements for the sports meeting and the running of it. He regretted that tho club had been unlucky in regard to the weather, which, however, ULd only served to prove how popular tho club and the sports meeting really were. He added that it was part of the Government’s policy to encourage such gatherings and he hoped that the club would continue to prosper.

It was a wonderfully good day's fun and there was never a dull moment, the officials having seen to it that there would be ‘‘something doing” all the time. The secretary, Mr It. Gates, had everything at his linger tips, and assisted by a band of willing stewards, the meeting was run as if by clockwork. The president of tho club is Air J. Q. Cameron, and tho vice-presidents are Messrs D. Cowdrey, V. Bird, H. Olliver, E. Conlau, J Funnel], E. Christensen, J. W. Scott, F. A. Mills, T. Grammer, senr., A. Jamieson and A. Thomson.
