Demonstration of the Finer Points of Squash Rackets
EX-DOMINION CHAMPIONS AT PLAY. The demonstration of squash rackets by two fine exponents in Mr. N. Kingscctc and Mr. Peter Hall, of Hawarden, both of the Christchurch Club, at the Palmerston North Club’s new premises, Princess street, on Saturday afternoon drew a fair attendance of euthusfasts to witness a sparkling exhibition of the game. The visitors were introduced by Mr. H. N. Watson, president, who stated that Mr. Kingscote was tfac fouuder of squash rackets in New Zealand and first champion and Mr. Hall had been champion for two years running, also runner-up to H. Hopman for .the Australian championship. Before entering on play Mr. Kingscote outlined the rudiments of the game lor the uninitiated and for the enlightened the essential points and teenmque, stressing the importance of good length and ground work as in tennis. It was essential to work on the sides of the court. Mr. Kingscote said, explaining defensive shots, the drop cut and the necessity for gainiag position in the centre of the court to deal effectively with any shot. The visitors then engaged in a threeset match maintaining j*».rticularly fast pace—squash rackets is tremendously last—and at the conclusion they were applauded for their very fine exhibition.
Prior to the star match Mr. C. Birch, of Wellington, who represented his school (Wellington) in England 35 years ago, and also the Public {Schools of England, in “real” rackets, engaged Rawlins, of Massey College, also an English public schoolboy, in a threeset match, which was full of interest, and tho veteran, Mr. Birch, indicated that he had not lost his dash.
