Pahiatua County Council
MONTHLY MEETING. On Saturday morning the first county meeting for 1937 was held, there being present: Councillors A. W. Bisset (chairman), T. Fouhy, P. H. Horne, F. V. Bryant, W. Lassen, H. R. Whitta, and A. W. Bisset. The county clerk, Mr. J. Hutton, read out .the accounts for December, amounting to £1215 7s 4d. These were recommended for payment. Correspondence. A letter was received from a county employee asking for wages when, from October 14 to November 9, he was an inmate of the Pahiatua Public Hospital. It was pointed out that this man had not been put into hospital through an accident while employed by the county and really he had no claim. It was decided to pay half wages the time he was indisposed. Mr. George Baker wrote asking for an increase of wages, as from September 1 to December 26 he had travelled 740 miles in his car. He carted petrol and oil used in the grader and he asked for 4d a mile.—This was granted. Mr. Fouhy spoke of Mr. L. Timmins wanting to lease the county reserve at Marima. As the Dairy Company had gone into liquidation .this piece of land was available and Mr. Timmins could have the section subject tfc the conditions and rental being the same. Seven letters from the New Zealand Counties' Association referring to industrial matters, general labourers' agreement, Dominion local body labourers' dispute, general labourers' award, local bodies' award, and clerical workers ' dispute. All letters were received. The Manawatu Employers' Association wrote asking would the county join the association with regard to the industrial dispute. The clerk stated the fee was £4 4s and it was carried that the county join, A letter from the Local Government Loans Board regarding the bridges loan of £4900 was received. The chairman remarked that the delay was most annoying. 11 The loan has been repeatedly held up by 'red .tape' methods at the Local Government Loans Board," stateTT Cr. Bisset. A letter from the Department of Lands and Survey stated they could not alter the decision made with reference to the Makuri township block.— Received. The Akitio County Council wrote suggesting a conference to discuss the Local Government (Amalgamation Schemes) Bill. The chairman remarked that they were quite contented with their lot and that they would fight to the last ditch to keep the Pahiatua county. It was decided that the delegates be members of the executive finance committee. —Carried. Cr. Bryant i)roposed that the overseer, chairman and county consulting engineer should inspect the bridges over the Makairo and Waitakatorua streams and report at the next meeting. —Carried. A tender from Mrs. E. Mcßae for the lease of section 27, block 8, Showgrounds, for a period of three years was accepted. A tender for the lease of section 25, block 11, at Konini was not accepted. The report of the works and finance committee were adoptod. Tbo treasurer's report disclosed a very satisfactory position. Mr. Hutton stated that the rate collection had improved this year, tffe collection having been almost doubled.. Engineer's Report, The caterpillar tractor has been employed at Ballance and Mangaone, where metal has been dumped for maintenance work. The trucks have been engaged on surface repairs on highways and also on county roads at Ballance, Hamua, Konini and Kaitawa.
