Runciman and Roosevelt

IMPORTANT ECONOMIC DISCUSSIONS. Received Sunday, 9.5 p.m. NEW YORK, Jan. 16. The Times’ Washington correspondent says important economic discussions are expected to occur next weekend (January 23rd) when Rt. Hon. Walter Runciman, President of the British Board of Trade, will be a White House guest. ( President Roosevelt at a press conference to-day, however, indignantly denied London reports appearing in the Hearst press that he had invited Britain and France to begin preliminary discussions for the adoption of a peace programme based on financial trado factors. Mr Runciman was not coming on a mission but was invited to White House as tho President’s personal friend. The impression is gained, that Mr Runciman has not yet informed President Roosevelt wliat he wishes to discuss. Some belief is expressed that the appointment of M. Georges Bonnet as French Ambassador to tho United States may result in further soundings on the war debt question. Some thought is apparent here that Mr Runciman’s and M. Bonnet’s talks may initiate a movement for an international conference to discuss currency stabilisation, trade and allied subjejets.
