The Manawatu Daily Times MONDAY, JANUARY 18, 1937. Empire Flying Boats

The news in to-day’s cables that the first Empire flyingboat service has been successfully inaugurated is the realisation of the prophecy made four years ago by Mr. A. Gouge, chief designer of Messrs. Short Brothers, and lends weight to the views concerning the further development of the flyingboat. The loaded weight of the boats now in service is 40,0001 b., the wing-loading is about 2Slb. to the square foot, and take-off speed 65 miles an hour. Mr. Gouge is of the opinion that no problems will have to be solved in producing boats double the weight of those now in service, and he believes that such boats will become necessary for ocean travel. He also looks forward to the construction of flying-boats of a loaded weight of 160,0001 b., of a wing-loading of 401 b. to the square foot and of a take-off speed exceeding 100 miles an hour. lie adds that it is difficult to foresee the ultimate limit of wing-loading, lie points out the value, other things being equal, of high wing-loading in relation to cruising speed, range, economy of operation and efficiency both in flying and at moorings during bad weather.
