Trentham Trials
FLOOD TIDE AGAIN PLEASES Though not quite so bad as in the city, the weather was more like winter than Summer at Trentham on Saturday morning, when preparations for the Wellington meeting this week were carried a further stage (states ‘‘Rangatira” of the Post). The feature performance of the morning was again that of the Cup topweight, Flood Tide. The raiu had ceased before work commenced, but the going on the trial grass, though not heavy, was very greasy. Flood Tide (R. G. Stratton) and Ponty (S. Wilson) galloped nine furlongs, and it was like a real Cup trial. Passing the mile Ponty had pulled his way to a lead of two lengths, but Flood Tide was on terms at the six furlongs, slightly ahead at the half-mile, and then drew away easily over the. last furlong to finish over three lengths in front. Flood Tide’s time for the mile was lmin 45 2-ssec, the first half in 52sec and the last half in 53 2-ssee. Ponty was ridden with hands on this occasion, and his weak finish would not make him look a very hopeful prospect over the Cup distance, especially as it is known that he can handle conditions such as Saturday morning’s. Rona Bay (P. Burgess)' and Sunee (B. E. Edwards) started from near the nine furlongs, and after the three-year-old had run across his companion he had a two lengths’ lead passing the mile. He increased this to three lengths at the half-mile, reached from the mile in 51sec, and, though both horses were stopping at the end, he finished four lengths in front after requiring 58sec for the last half-mile. Essex went better for the stable apprentice, but Sunee is not of much use on such a track. During the trial Essex lost two shoes. Shy (Burgess) was three parts of a length ahead of Geitil (L. Faulkner) at the end of seven furlongs in .lmin 33sec, the last half-mile in 54sec, both horses stopping near the finish. Shy, though an acceptor, may not race at Trentham, as he has been nominated at Takapuna and may leave early for the north. Arctic King (R. Hawes), picked up by Erase (Burgess) at the three furlongs, ran five furlongs in lmin 7sec, the last half-mile in 53 3-ssec. First Spec (F. Boxall) took lmin 36sec for seven furlongs. Revival (Edwards) did the same journey in lmin 34sec. Boomerang (Farland) did one of the most useful trials of the morning in beating; Cuddle (Wilson) by a length
and a-half over seven furlongs in lmin 32sec, the last half-mile, after they had gone too fast early, taking 54 l-ssec. Boomerang comes in on the later days. Acceptable (Wilson) beat Fulojoy (Farland) by three-quarters of a length over five furlongs in lmin 4 4-ssec, the , last half-mile in 52 l-ssec.
