Poor Prospects for Ghee
The Indian ghee market is of no value to Australia, according to a report submitted to the Commonwealth Government by the Australian trade delegation which recently visited India, Burma and Ceylon. The report states that as one pound of ghee is approximately equivalent to one and onc-third pounds of butter, for which Sd would bo returned, the return per pound of butter would be 6d. The value of Australian butter, even of the lowest quality, is slightly less than Is per Jb. Australian currency. Before the trade could be considered by Australian producers, the price for even the lowest quality Australian butter on the London market would have to fall to 44s lOd ewt. The lowest price year recorded was 5Ss, in December, 1934. In two possible eventualities the manufacture and shipment of ghee from Australia might become commercially practicable; in the event of a British quota on butter imports, or the prohibition by the Commonwealth of the export of second-grade or lower quality butter.
