Angas Beaten in Semi-finals

Fine Display by Coombe STUKT ELIMINATED BY BEDFORD Per Press Association. TIMARU, Last Night. The defeat of C. Angas, who was favourite for the men’s singles title, by C. Coombe (Wellington) provided a sensationul opening for the fifth day of the national tennis championships, while on the next court N. Bedford (Wellington) created a surprise by eliminating N. Sturt (Auckland). Both matches finished in the fourth set. Angas failed to get going against the Wellington man who at times played above himself and maintained a gruelling pace. It was the Canterbury man s second defeat at the hands of Coombe in champioi-ships as he went down in the quarter-finals at Wellington last season. It is doubtful if - combe over played better tennis and ids victory over the second ranked player in New Zealand was very popular in many quarters. Bedford was not expected to beat Sturt after the latter's fine display against Barnett on Saturday, but the Wellington man was the essence of steadiness and found his length much more quickly than Sturt who too often netted his returns and drop 3hots. The women’s semi-finals did not produce anything in the way of brilliant tennis and the first and second ranked players, Miss Dulcie Nicholla and Miss Nessie Beverley, went through to the linal somewhat easily. Miss Bishop pushed Miss Nicholls to 8 6in the first set but that was the finish. Miss Poole played her characteristic hardhitting game against Miss Beverley but was very erratic and never looked like winning.

In the semi-finals of the women’s doubles Misses Bishop aud Wako (Canterbury) who created an upset on Saturday by defeating Misses Nicholls and Howe, brought off another surprise by eliminating Misses N. and M. Beverley. Miss Nessie Beverley was not playing true to form and her sister though getting in wonderful shots was unable to carry the whole burden. In the men’s doubles Angas and Seay advanced to the final after a victory in straight sets over Coombe and Charters (Wellington), The winners were the more effective combination, scoring repeatedly with well-angled shots at close range. In the other match Ferkins and Roussell (Wellington) dropped the second set to Cant and Barnett (Canterbury), but won the remaining two. The semi-finals in the mixed doubles have not yet been decided. Scores: — Men's Singles. Semi-finals: D. C. Coombe beat C. Angas, 6 —4, 3—6, 6—l, 6 —3; N. F. Bedford beat N. G.
