“SCANDAL AT BARONS COURT”

(By Allan Grey) Evelyn gasped in alarm. Howard looked out— And then he broke into a laugh, as the prominent jaw of Chief Inspector Whaley hove In sight. “ That’s right,” said Whaley, laughing, “ try and get your own back by running me over.” “I don’t want to harm anybody, to-day,” laughed Howard. Whaley glanced at the radiant girl next to him, and smiled appreciatively. It was hard to believe she was the same girl as that white, haggard little woman he had known during the two awful days at Barons Court. “ I’ll believe you, this time,” said Whaley, with a smile. “ I couldn’t get away in time to come to the wedding, Mr Lane, but I thought I’d offer my congratulations.” Howard opened the door of the car. Whaley shook hands with both of them. “ Good-bye,” he said, “ and good luck.” The door closed. The car moved off. Whaley stood staring after it, with a little frown at his forehead. He swung round as footsteps sounded nearby. “ Well, Inspector?” smiled Colonel Everard Laire. “ Gome to ask some more questions?” Whaley shook his hand. “ Thought I’d see them off,” he said, a little shame-facedly. “ A splendid sentiment,” laughed the Colonel. “ Now come up to the Court and drink their health. No one will try to avoid you this time.” Together, the Colonel and the Chief Inspector went towards the house. The gathering gloom of evening was about them, while ahead they could see the friendly lights of Barons Court. (The End).
