Of Local Interest
Sir Alfred Ransom, M.P., has donated £2 2s to the funds of the Pahiatua Agricultural and Pastoral Association, in the activities of which he takes a keen interest. In spite of the unseasonable weather experienced during the last month, local bowlers are as enthusiastic as ever and on holidays full rinks are the order of the day. A number of fixtures and friendly matches with outside clubs have been played and the prospects for keen and interesting games for various trophies in the New Year seem bright. Pahiatua had this year one of the brightest and most successful New Year’s Eves for many a long day. Until a late hour shoppers thronged the stroets, and the town, with its coloured lights and gaily decorated shop windows, made' a bright and colourful spectacle. A largo crowd gathered in the squares at midnight and with cheering and singing gave the New Year a warm welcome. One hopes that Pahiatua's New Y’ear Eve business was not a flash in the pan. However, the portents are reassuring, and all the indications of the past few months seem to point to a continuance of it in 1937.
