Issues in Maritime Strike
WANT AUSTRALIAN WAGES AND CONDITIONS. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 9. Harry Bridges, the maritime strike leader, in an address to 20,000 at a mass meeting, said: “The Australian lines pay better wages than the American. They give their stewards an eight-hour day and other groups cash overtime which we are demanding.” The Oakland (California) City Council voted an appeal to President Roosevelt to intervene in the shipping strike and bring about a settlement. The resolution cited the great injury to business and industry.
