Housing Construction Starts in New Year
STATE JOINERIES TO BE LEASED Per Peeks Association. WELLINGTON, Last Night. Tho construction of 375 houses in the Wellington district as the first largo housing scheme prepared by the new Department of Housing Construction will begin early in the New Y r ear. Tenders will be called immediately for 19 contracts.
The Government also intends to invite applications for the lease of the new joinery factories at Kaiwarra (Wellintgon) and Penrose (Auckland) to firms offering to manufacture joinery on the most favourable terms. Officially it is estimated that the construction of 400 houses in 28 weeks will directly provide employment for about 770 men. Tenders for the housing contracts and the lease of the Kaiwarra factory close on January 5, 1937. The Department now has in hand tho preparation of contracts for the Auckland scheme, the first group of houses being situated at tho Orakei settlement.
