Paragraphs About People and Events
Messrs C. M. Duthie and K. A. Brownjolin, Union Airways pilots who spent a month 011 a flying holiday in Australia, have resumed their duties. <s> <S> <s> <s>
"I have lived in Fitherbort avenue for the past two years, and I have scarcely seen amotorist travel along that highway to or from town at a speed much below 30 m.p.h.,” declared the Town Clerk, Mr J. R. Hardie, when giving evidence in the Palmerston North Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Shortly before tho loan issue was placed before ratepayers, the Palmerston Nortlit 50,000 Club wrote to tho Hon. F. Jones (Minister of Defence) asking him to advise the club if ho favoured the principle of municipalities controlling the airports. The Minister has written to the club under date December 7, as follows: —“It was not until my return on Saturday from tho South Island, where I have been engaged during the past week, that I received your letter of the 26th. ultimo. Had your communication reached mo in time, it would have given me very much pleasure to have sent you a suitable and favourable message. However, I was gratified to read in the newspapers that the loan proposal had been carried.—Yours faithfully, (signed) F. Jones.” <s> <s>.<s> <S> Citizens about the streets at 2 p.m. yesterday were interested in the appearance in the air of tho Wellington Aero Club’s Miles Hawk trainer. Becently imported, this yellow aeroplane proved that she was as graceful and speedy as reports indicated. The machine has a rated maximum speed of 150 m.p.k., with a cruising speed of 130 m.p.h., and a landing speed of 45 m.p.h. The engine is a 135 h.p. Gipsy Major. The monoplane is lit ted with wheel brakes and with flaps attached to the underside of the wing which, when let down,
steepen the glide and reduce the lauding speed. But for the wing flaps and the addition of live square feet to the wing area and the provision of slightly wider cockpits, the ’plane is similar to the Miles Hawk which the late Squad-ron-Leader M. C. McGregor and Air 11. Walker (of Palmerston North) flew in the Melbourne Centenary air race. Incidentally, the pilot on this occasion was Air. Walker and he had as his passenger Mr. Gamble. This machine is similar to those which tho Government is purchasing for issue to aero clubs throughout the country.
