THE KING’S FARMS

Tenants Take Over at Sandringham CATTLE STUDS KEPT (Own Correspondent—By Air Mail) LONDON, Oct. 13. The King has decided that the big Royal farms at Anmer, West Newton and Appleton, on the Sandringham estate which js his personal property, shall bo offered to tenants. They have already in part been let. I understand that the farms have been proving costly to run for some years. In future the land farmed directly for the King in Norfolk will not exceed 1200 acres.

It is stated here that if his Majesty could have found suitable tenants for tho remaining Royal farms he would have given up farming in Norfolk entirely.

I understand that the King will arrive at Sandringham next Monday, and will stay for about a week. Although no pheasants' have been artificially reared this year on the estate, they are abundant.

There is no doubt, however, that one of tho main occupations of his Majesty during his stay will be to make sure that the estate and the farms are being so developed and modernised that they will yield an economic living to the new tenant farmers.

To-day I saw the equipment, the dairy herd of some 20 cows, 13 horses, a large herd of pigs, and the growing crops on the big farm at West Newton being valued, as Mr. William Parker, who farms 16,000 acres in Norfolk, took over from the King’s agents. Mr. Parker told me that ho had taken over some 700 acres. From the herd of. tuberculin-tested cattle on the farm will supply the Court when at Sandringham-and the villages of West Newton and Sandringham. On the farms which remain under the King’s direct control at Wolferton and Appleton, the pedigree herds of cattle established b> King Gf rge will, I understand, be maintained
