Apiti

From Our Uwu Correspondent. The December meeting of the Apiti School committee was held on Wednesday evening. JUr H. William was in the chair and .Messrs A. W. Benseman, Geo. Watkins, J. H. Cowan, W. Hogan (secretary) and A. W. Bird (iiead teacher) were also present. A letter is to be sent to the Apiti Co-operative Dairy Company, thanking it for tho donation of £2 2s for the call-rearing competitions. It was decided tnat each child entering a calf be presented with a book. Mr Bird is to purchase tho books, and if the amount donated is not sufficient, the committee wifi draw upon their special fund lor the balance. During tlio holidays the school floors will again bo specially treated with a cleansing preparation. Tne sciiool concert is to be, on December IV, and the school staff and children aro practising for same. The committee decided to buy tho supper, but if any parents wish to assist, baskets will be very acceptable. Audrey Do Qucsne, who is only 12 years ot' age, is to oa congratulated on winning a Hew Plymouth Girls' High School scholarship, by being placed tenth in the examination. There was considerable discussion on the question of having a district high school in Apiti and the committee is strongly in favour of a move being made in this direction, and the secretary is to write to the Education Board for further information. Apiti is DO miles from Feilding and it is too far to consider allowing enildren to travel to and from Feilding daily to school there. A local resident, Mrs T. Nix. wrote to the Minister of Education and forwarded to the committee the reply received from the Hon. IJ.1 J . Fraser. This letter-stated that if twelve pupils were available it might be possible io commence a district high school. There are two separate classrooms available for high school pupils, and if tho parents back up the school committee, Apiti School should shortly be a district high school. If the parents considering sending their children back to school next year wouid notify the secretary, Mr Hogan, ho would then have definite figures to place beiore tho Education Board. Parents at Table Flat, Umutoi and Utu-.vai may also be interested in this matter. Women’s Institute.

Mrs C. M. Stanley presided at the meeting of the Apiti Women’s Institute and extended a cordial invitation to all visitors, particularly to Miss Grant, Federation president. Miss Irelle Doughty was a new member welcomed. It was decided that the January meeting be a garden afternoon and Miss Madge McKay offered her home for the afternoon and this met with tho appreciation of all present. Miss Grant’s talk on the A.C.W.W. Conference, which she recently attended in Washington, was followed with close attention by all members, who had much pleasure in sharing her many interesting experiences, iliss Grant and Mrs It. 8. Law, of Palmerston North, judged the competitions, for which Mrs G. Watkins was steward. Results were:—Chocolate sponge, Mrs Benseman 1, Mrs H. 11. Jensen 2; kettleholders, Miss Strahan 1, Mrs H. Jensen 2; three best roses, Mrs John Jensen 1, Miss Madge McKay 2. As Mrs Prince and Miss Prince were unable to be present, Mrs R. Churcher distributed several hundreds of aster plants to the members, to grow for tlio aster competition in the autumn. Mrs Stanley extended seasonal greetings and thanks to Miss Grant and presented her with a posy of roses and lilies made by Mrs J. Jensen. Mrs F. Munro was also the recipient of a posy of violas made by Mrs H. Jensen. Mrs Stanley voiced the regret felt by all members at tho departure from Apiti of such a keen member as Mrs Munro. Mr Munro, too, has at all times been a good helper to tho Women's Institute and members joined in wishing both Mr and Mrs Munro every happiness in their new home. It was pleasing to know that Mrs. Munro would still be able to come into Apiti to tlio institute. Mrs Munro expressed her thanks to the members. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs H. Jensen, Misses M. and S. Malone and Evelyn Jensen, and the meeting concluded with exchange of seasonal greetings.
