AUCKLAND PROSECUTIONS. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Dee. 4. A fine of £3O, in default oue month’s imprisonment, was imposed by Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., on Thomas Ernest Dixon, efiarged with assisting in the management of a common gaminghouse in the city. He pleaded guilty. The police said that constables visited the premises and took bets with the accused, and when they searched the premises they found evidence that 30 persons had incurred betting debts with the firm to the extent of £503. The accused was convicted of a similar charge in 1934, when ho was fined £25. Euey McGrath (40), a married woman with three children, was charged with bookmaking on tho Ellerslie racecourse on November 30. The police said that she was taking bet 3 up to half-a-crown. She admitted the offence, stating that her husband was in ill-health and that ho had been unemployed for two months. She pleaded guilty and the Magistrate convicted her but postponed sentence till December II to enable the police to investigate the position of tlie family.
