Outstanding Success Of Parish Flower Show

PINE EFFORT FOR ALL SAINTS’ PARISH FUNDS.

The first flower show organised to aid All Saints’ parish funds and heTd in tho Parish hall yesterday met with outstanding success, thero being 229 entries. From early morning a strong committee was hard at work, directed by the organising secretary, Mr. H. G. Bagnall, and by afternoon the hall presented a very gay appearance with a wealth of beautiful flowers and in addition there- were stalls holding many useful and attractive articles for sale. Balloons and flags made their contribution and the attendants at the sweet stall with brightly-coloured aprons and caps added to the festive occasion.

Before calling upon the Mayor, Mr. A. E. Mansford, to open the show, Canon U. Y. Woodward explained that the object of this effort was to augment parish funds. . Mr. Mansford expressed his pleasure in the occasion and said looking down the history of tho ages, he felt the church was never needed as much as it was to-day. He felt ail would agree tyhen they realised the seriousness of the European situation. It was only as we dedicated ourselves to our trust that we would be able to overcome war fears, he said. It was only as we strengthened the old Christian ideals and truly worked for peace that we could look forward to any future. In formally declaring the show open, Mr. Mansford congratulated the ladies on the excellent display of flowers and the work and enthusiasm in evidence to achieve such a fine result. He wished the promoters every success in this venture. Mr. A. W. Just, who was the judge of the cut blooms, commented in enthusiastic terms on the excellent quality of. the exhibits.

The function was continued last evening when there was a good of the public and any goods unsoW. at the end of the evening were disposed of by auction. Competitions were won as follow: Dinner, Mrs. Croucher; Maori doll, Mr. Barrett; silver cigarette case, Mrs. E. W. Mills; silver card case, Mrs. D. S. Quartley. As a result of this very fine effort the funds should benefit to the extent of about £7O. This first flower show having proved so encouraging, it ii anticipated that it will become an annual fixture.
