From Our Own Correspondent. Euchre and Dance.
A euchre party and dance, organised by the local Anglican Church committee, was held or. Saturday evening last, when there was a very good attendance. The winners in tho cards were Miss M. Anderson and Mr R. Andrews, with Mrs Hill and Mr J. Woodley the consolation winners. Supper was served by members of the committee, after which dancing was enjoyed, music being kindly supplied by Misses G, Lawrence, M. Anderson and Mr A. Lawrence. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss M. Anderson and Mr A. Greves, while a lucky Gay Gordons was won by Miss I. Anderson and Mr R. Andrews. Mr F. Judd was M.C. Thanks are due to Mrs Greves for donating the nzes for tho evening. School Committee.
A meeting of the Fitzherbert East School committee was held on Monday evening, when Mr N. Chowen presided over the following members:—Messrs Greves, Gilshnan, Hill and Ferguson. The head teacher, Mr Craven, was also present. Correspondence was received from the ICairanga County Council regarding the drain in front of the school, the council agreeing to supply and lay the pipes. It was decided to proceed with the work. The Wanganui Education Board advised of an additional grant for school improvements, to be payable with the usual capitation grant, at the end of the term. A donation was received from the Aokautere Tennis Club, the secretary being instructed to convey the committee’s thanks to the Tennis Club. It was agreed to write to the A. and P. Show committee, expressing the committee’s appreciation of the facilities and judges’ work in tho pony classes, in which the schoolchildren had entered. Several suggestions are to be forwarded in the hope that the show officials will be able to include them in next year’s schedule. The head teacher's reports showed the school roll to remain at 46. Tito proficiency examination, for which there were five candidates from tho school, had been conducted at tho College Street School, and the annual examinations for the other classes would soon be commenced. Tho report expressed the head teacher’s thanks to those parents and friends who had visited tho school for the Calf Club judging, and to Mr F. 11. Bennett for a donation towards the prize fund of the club. Thanks were also due to Messrs Petersen, Hill, Ferguson and Greves lor valued assistance at the recent show. It was decided to express the committee’s thanks to Mr Petersen for his interest. The school inspection report showed the school to be maintaining its previous good standard and complimented the committee upon tho attention given to tho environment. The chairman. Mr Chowen, congratulated Mr Craven and Miss Bird upon the general excellence of the report. It was decided, after some discussion, to present the prizes on Parents’ Day, which is to be held at the school on Thursday, December 17. Tho speaker for the afternoon is to bo Rev. Holland. As this was the last meeting for the year, Mr Craven extended the season’s greetings to the committee from himself and Miss Bird, to which Mr Greves replied.
