Mrs F. Dowsett, of Palmerston, Becomes 92
Many felicitations were received by Mrs. F. Dowsett, of this city on the occasion of her 92nd. birthday recently. Born in Wellington, where her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Luke Harris, arrived in the sailing ship Clifton, in November, 1544, and married as a girl of 18 in St. Paul’s Pro-Cathedral, Wellington. Mrs. Dowsett, who is living with hor daughter, Mrs. Emily Edmunds, Miro street, Palmerston North, still recalls the earthquakes experienced in Wellington when she was a young w’oman. People were sent to Mount Victoria for safoty, and once she and her husband were there for six weeks. Fifty years ago Mr. and Mrs. Dowsett settled at Newman, whero Mr. Dowsett kept tho post office. Mrs. Edmunds was the first postmistress and tho first woman to be married at Newman. There were 10 children of Mrs. Dowsett’s marriage. Those now alive are Messrs. W. Dow sett (Newman), P. Dowsett (Wood-* ville) and Mrs. Edmunds. There are 18 grandchildren and 45 great-grand-children. A cake for Mrs. Dowsett’s 92nd. birthday was made by a granddaughter, Mrs. L. Burling, Eketahuna.
