Patchwork Embroidery
DAT CH WORK embroidery * has the effect of oldfashioned patchwork, but is obtained by means of modern wool embroideries. No transfers are needed for the work. To make a square cushion cover first rule border lines along all four sides of the top square and work these with stem stitching in black wool. Divide the square into odd shapes, using pencil and ruler, and mark the shapes with more black stem stitching, so that they look as though patched together. Each “patch” must be filled in with a different design, embroidered in wool of gay shades, so that, when finished, the panel looks like a piece of old-fashioned patchwork. There will be rainbow bright flower sprays in one patch, black and cherry satin stitch spots in another, emerald and puce fly stitch lines in another, and so on. The flower designs can be drawn round sixpences and halfpennies and the little circles filled in with daisy loop petals, or worked with buttonhole or stroke stitch.
