“Labour Has Gone Too Far”
SHEARING ABSURDITY FARMERS’ OPINIONS. When a letter was received at Thursday’s meeting of the Southern Hawke’s Bay Provincial Executive from the Dominion secretary' asking for information regarding labour troubles or increased costs in the district, the President (Mr J. Livingston) said the most glaring instance of interference with farm labour was the fact that shearers were not allowed to work on Saturday afternoons. If shearers had been held up throughout the week on account of the weather they were not.permitted to shear on Saturday afternoons if the weather was suitable. “It seems absolutely absurd,” he added. It looked as if there would bo no shearers available next season as most of them would go on to public works. “Labour has gone too far, but they cannot go back,” remarked Mr F. A. Thompson. “They w'ill have to go back,” emphatically declared the president.
