Coronation Flags From Japan Discouraged
CITY COUNCIL IMPERIALISTIC The Palmerston North City Council last evening, on the motion of Crs. W. B. Tennent and ft. L. C. Aitchison, carried a motion urging the pubile and other local bodies to see that any Hags used in connection with tho King’s Coronation celebrations were of British manufacture and not Japanese. Cr. Tennent said Sir Richard Linton, when speaking in Palmerston North last week, had spoken in similar vein. It would be outrageous to have New Zealand children, during such a time oi Empire rejoicing, waving Japanesemade flags, said Cr. Tennent, who thought that the British product should be used even if it cost a little more. He moved that the council distribute only British-made flags and request other local bodies to do the same. The Mayor (Mr. A. E. Mansford) stated that in ihe past the council had not done anything in the way of purchasing flags. Or. Tennent: Well, we cau recommend it to the public. The motion was carried.
