Congregational Ladies’ Guild
The monthly meeting oi' the Congregational Ladies’ Guild was held on Tuesday and took the form of a missionary afternoon. Mrs Simpson, w r ho presided, extended a welcome to ladies from the Baptist Chruch, who were the guests of the guild, hoping in this way to make for unity in the churches, which is so much lacking at the present time. The meeting opened with hymn and prayer and Scripture reading by the president. Vocal solos were rendered by Mesdames Coupe and Lyon •and were very much enjoyed. Mr J. Wilkinson, who was the speaker for the afternoon, gave a most inspiring and interesting talk on the pioneer days of the London Missionary Society in the South Seas. Many incidents of hardship and fortitude' which had been borne by these early missionaries came as a revelation to many of those present. On the motion of Mrs Mundy, a vote of thanks was accorded the speaker and carried by acclamation. Mrs Crabb, speaking for the Baptist friends, said how pleased they were to be present and gave thanks to the guild for the invitation. There were on view during the afternoon gifts which had been brought for the Christinas parcels to be despatched later to India and China to the church missionaries of the London Missionary Society. A collection was taken up to defray cost of postage. The meeting closed with the Benediction. Afternoon tea was then served, the hostesses being Mesdames Simpson, Lyon, Sparg, Nicholls and Miss Hose Edwards.
