Golf at Wanganui

“DIGGERS’ ” TOURNAMENT All ranks of the army, many regiments serving under the British flag and good golfers and bad will compete in tho Wanganui Returned Soldiers’ tournament, which is to be played on Belmont' links on Thursday next, October 15. Entries close next Monday, with Mr R. D. Smart, c/o “Chronicle,” Wanganui. A start was made with an annual returned soldiers’ tournament in 1934. Returned men in Australia make a special feature of their annual outings on the links, and in somo quarters over the Tasman tho response has been so great that the first four “hop over” at dawn. The first tournament promoted in Wanganui was an outstanding success and it was followed last year by one of exceptional good-fellowship. It is true that some “Diggers” who have taken part in the past have lived up to thoir name and have gone to Belmont moro like “digging in’’ than playing goli. At least, somo of their shots have been reminiscent of the old entrenching tool rather than of the modern golf club. Spring is usually at its best when this tournament is played and the wattles at Belmont are a blazo of glory. Add to that tho refreshing comradeship of the ‘‘Diggers” and a really firstclass day i the result. All “Diggers” who served with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, and ex-members of any British forces, or units from parts of the empire, such as Australia and Canada, aro eligible to compete. There will be a “rum” ration, that is if there are not too many sergeants. It has been dccided-to limit the entries to 100, so it would be advisable to enlist early. This year’s tourney promises to be better than either of the other two. Special preparations are being made. Competitors aro asked to wear the badges and patehes~oF their respective units.
