Refused to Carry Sacks of Potatoes
COOKS AND STEWARDS LEAVE MATAI. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Last Night. Six stewards and three cooks employed on the Government lighthouse steamer Matai to-night gave the master of tho vessel, Captain Burgess, 24 hours’ notice of their leaving the ship. The men’s decision was the sequel to their refusal to carry stores on board in tho afternoon. The captain refused to comment on the matter to-night, but the men alleged that the captain was adamant that they would have to carry sacks of potatoes on board, each sack weighing 2 cwt. The men claimed that in the Cooks’ and Stewards’ Award it was provided that members of the union should not carry stores weighing over 701bs. “We wero given the option of getting off the ship or carrying the stores on board,’ said ohfe man, “and we decided to give notice.” The Matai arrived to-day from the Hauraki Gulf and is scheduled to leave on Monday for Wellington via the North Capo and West Coast,
