A civic farewell will be given to the Minister of Finance at Auckland on Monday night and the Minister will leavo by the Aorangi for Vancouver on Tuesday on his way to England.— Press Assn.
In a by-election for a vacancy on the Blenheim Borough Council, held yesterday, Mr G. M. Spence was elected by a majority of 56. A total of 739 votes was cast and the voting was as follows:—Spence 309, E. M. Gibson 253, R. A. Jamieson 177. —Press Assn. An old resident of Sandon, Mr Burrows, had the misfortune on Wednesday afternoon to slip while crossiug the main highway at Sandon and fracturo the upper portion of his leg. Ho has been admitted to tho Palmerston North Public Hospital. His condition lastevening was serious.
Very widespread regret will be felt at the news of the death of Miss Marjorie Nicholson, elder daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Nicholson, of Levin, which occurred in the Wellington Hospital yesterday. Some few years ago the late Miss Nicholson joined the nursing stall of tho Palmerston North Hospital and her bright and happy disposition fitted her ideally for such a position. The funeral will take place at Levin on Saturday afternoon. There was a pleasant surprise party at the Club Hotel yesterday, where a number of citizens gathered to extend congratulations to Mr 11. B. Tucker, proprietor, on the occasion of,his 79th birthday'. Among those present were Messrs A. E. Mansford (Mayor), J. A. Nash, Alex. Clark, C. Russell, H. Collinson, E. F. Thwaites,.F. C. Litchfield and T. Hastings, all of whom expressed the wish to see Mr Tucker enjoy many more years of happiness. Afternoon tea was provided and Mr Geo. Tucker responded on behalf of his father.

A link with the earliest days of the settlement of Otago was severed yesterday gy the death of Air. John Archibald Duncan Adams, which occurred at his residence in Roslyn in his 93rd year. Air. Adams was born in Scotland in 1844 and was tho eldest son of Mr. John James Adams who camo out to New Zealand in the ship Blundell which arrived at Port Chalmers on September 21, 1848. When he first set eyes on this country ho was nearly four and a-half years of age. He was one of the two survivors of the 152 passengers who arrived by the Blundell, the other being Airs. A. Fraser, of Tirnaru. Air. Adams was about 27 years of age before ho was in a position to devoto his atten lion to tho legal profession with which he was associated for the remainder of his life. He was in practice at Port Chalmers lor several years, but in 1883 ho was joined by his younger brother (Air. Justice Adams) and the wellknown firm of Adams Bros, with offices at Port Chalmers and Dunedin was established. The partnership was in existence till 1910 when Air. J. A. D. Adams retired from practice. The firm of Alessrs. Adams Bros, is still in existence, but tho practice is now carried on by the 'two sons of Air. Justice Adams. —Press Assn.
