From Our Own Correspondent Women’s Institute. Mrs. C. M. Stanley presided at the October meeting at which three new members, Mrs. B. London, Misses Molly and Sophie Malone, were welcomed. Apologies were received from Mesdames L. P. Gould and R. Churclier. All present stood in ■silence in sympathy with the family ot tlio late Mr. G. H. Burin'll. The new secrotarc, Miss Stanley, was welcomed and a vote of appreciation was passed to the retiring secretary, Mrs. T. Brazier. A do- j nation of ±ll Is was made to the Dominion Federation funds. Mesdames AMcMurtrie and C. M. Stanley were the delegates < hosen to represent Apiti at the North Wellington Federation Council meeting to be held In Palmerston NOl th. After some discussion it was decided to again grow potatoes for the competition tho seed for which is being donated by Mrs. A. G. Prince. Owing to the councn meeting tho Apiti November meeting wil. be one day later than previously arranged. A further supply of W.l. cookery books met with ready 'sale. The golden chain talk was of an interesting visit to Mt. Egmont’ last Easter, related by Mrs. Geo. Watkins. Mrs.. Bielskl, of Rangiwahia, demonstrated black and white pastel pictures, the finished drawings being greatly admired. Several members tried their ski'd at this artistic work for which a competition will be held later. Mrs. M. Guthrie, of Mangaweka. a member of North Wellington Federation, extended greetings ar.d expressed pleasure at the decision made to continue with the potato competition. The speaker then explained the hospitality scheme organised by the South Canterbury Federation, for which they were aworded to Robert Young Rosebowl. Hospitality circles on similar lines have been organised at Tauranga and Akaroa and are proving very successful as many town dwellers, and even overseas visitors, have availed themselves of the opportunity to spend holidays in congenial farm homes. Mrs. Guthrie and Mrs. Bielski were thanked for their assistance to the programme. The rag bag drive was well supported and Mrs. Humphries kindly offered to be the selling agent. Miss Violet Cockburn, who is very shortly leaving the district, was presented with a recipe book and all joined in wishing her every happiness in her married life. The flower competitions attracted many entries and the following were tho placed competitors: Collection of bulbs, Mrs. A. W. Bird 1. Miss Strahan 2. Mrs. R. Cliurcher 3; decorated bowl of bulbs. Miss Strahan 1, Mrs. John Jensen 2, Mrs. Humphries 3. Decorated bowl of other spring flowers, Mrs. John Jensen 1, Miss Madge McKay 2, Miss Strahan 3; madeira cake. Miss Strahan 1. Mrs. A. G. Prince 2, Mrs. A. W. Benseman 3. 111 the competition lor something new from something old, the prize was won by Miss Strahan, with a child's frock. The competition stewards were Mesdames John Jensen and Owen Jensen. Mesdames A. W. Benseman, A. W. Bird, A. Dobson and A. G. Prince served afternoon tea. Personal. Miss McDonald, of Pahiatua, spent a week in Apiti as the guest of Mrs. A. W. Bird, of tlio Schoolhouse. Mrs. C. Lucas, of Rewa, is staying at Marton Block with her niece, Mrs. Athol Viles. Tho first round of the Apiti Golf Club s competition for the A. J. Berryman Cup is now in progress, the men players competing for this trophy while the prize for the ladies’ competition is a golf bag donated by Mr. E. Fair, of Feilding.
