GOOD FIELDS ENGAGED. WIN-AND-PLACE BETTING. The Dunedin Jockey Club’s Spring Meeting opens at Wingatui to-day and tho course is reported to be in good ordor. The botting will be win-and-place and horses likely to be in demand aro as under: — Hurdles: Polydora and Santoft. Trial Handicap: Thermidor, Autumn Wind and Lumincre. Mangatua Handicap: Jack Ahoy, Braw Lad and Poniard. Electric Handicap: Greek Gold, Capital and Bay Duke. Mosgiel Handicap: Queen Dorothy and Travenna. He won over a mile on tho first day and finished third in tho Guineas, run over a similar distance, on the concluding day. «>«><s><s Tho gallop recorded by Red Manfred over a circuit on the course proper at Ellerslie on Tuesday morning is likely to gain the bay gelding additional friends for tho Mitchelson Cup. It also proves that ho has derived considerable benefit as the result of the two outings at Avondale. So far Red Manfred has not proved capable of winning over a mile and a half in good handicap company, and he will need to improve in order to beat tho field opposed to him at Ellerslie next Saturday (states tho Star.) SALE RING BARGAIN There was not much competition for Talking, tho winner of tho A.J.C. Derby when he was offered at the yearling sales of 1935, and ho was knocked down to his present trainer. At that sale five yearlings cost over 1000 guineas each. They wero The Athenian, Blue Sky, Brian, Courage and Heroic’s Pride. They havo won ono small race between them. WOODVILLE HORSES AT ELLERSLIE Red Manfred was allotted a mile and a quarter at Ellerslie on Tuesday morning and ran the distance in 2.1 - 4-5, the last round taking 2.5 4-5. He cov-ered-the last seven furlongs in 1.33, and the final three -in ; 41 -2-ss.- It-Was a first-class effort, and he was fiiiishing on well. Golden Blonde had an advantage over Mandamus at the close of five furlongs run in 1.6 1-5 but Mandamus could have done hotter. Francis Drake was a shade in front of Aiwai at the end of half a mile covered in ( 52 1-5 sees. Karo sprinted six furlongs in 1.19 3-5. AUCKLAND SCRATCHING. Royal Secret, who was accepted for two events, was scratched at 12.20 p.m. yesterday for tho Flying Handicap on tho first day of the Auckland meeting.
