Feilding School Committees

MONTHLY MEETINGS.

On. Monday evening the committees of the Feilding public schools held their monthly meetings. At the Manchester Street School meeting, Mr G. J. Fitzpatrick (chairman) presided and there were also present Messrs J. Campbell, L. J. Carmine, T. Burne, A. K. Itobertshawo (headmaster) and Mrs P. G. Guy. The headmaster’s report stated that the average roll strength for the month was 378, with an average attendance of 341.5. Tho roll strength as at Monday was 381. The attendances during the month had been affected by the prevalence of whooping cough. Flower day, held during tho month, had resulted in a sum of £7 8s being raised. For the twelve months ended September 30, the children of the school had banked through tho school post office banking system £135 7s 9d, which sum, excluding tho term holidays, represented an average deposit of £3 per week. This was very good indeed. Correspondence was received from local merchants regarding the matter of bunting for the Coronation celebrations in May next, and after some little discussion, it was decided not to do anything in the matter. A letter was received from the Wanganui Education Board advising the appointment of Mr J. A. Curran, of Hawke’s Bay, as first assistant master vice Mr Minogue. The chairman referred to the announcement of tho Government that capitation grants were to be increased and he understood that the school would shortly benefit in consequence of this decision.

A deputation from the Parents’ Association waited on the committee with regard to proposals for. tho holding of a gala day towards tho end of the school year. Lytton Street School.

Mr C. V. Jewell (chairman) presided over the meeting of tho Lytton Street School committee, and there were also present Messrs F. P. Fawcett, C. V. Guy, H. T. Simmonds, C. H. Batt (headmaster) and Mcsdames T. Donaldson and E. Scott.

The headmaster reported that the roll strength stood at 311, with an average attendance for the month of 288.3, which was slightly better than last month. The attendances were stili being affected by prevailing sickness among children. During the montfl Miss Chambers was granted two months’ sick leave by tho board, and Mrs Thomas was appointed to fill the vacancy. The lawnmower, which the committee had ordered, had been supplied by the board, whose secretary (Mr Bolton) recently visited the school and approved of the provision of blinds for the windows on the sunny side of tho school building. A sum of £1 lla 6d had been received from tho Sandon sports committee as the school share of prizo money awarded on tho basis of points won. School sports were being well catered for by the masters and tho children were doing very well in this respect.: - ’ .

The question of the purchase of bunting for the Coronation celebrations was considered, and it was agreed to ascertain from the Wanganui Education Board whether tho Education Department was making any arrangements for the supply of flags, etc., to schools for the occasion. In the event of tho board not doing anything in the matter, the committee will make purchases locally. Mbsdames Donaldson and Scott were appointed the visiting eommitteo for the month.
