Vengeful Elephant

MALAY VILLAGES TERRORISED

A maddened bull elephant, with one tusk broken and four bullets in its body, is rampaging through the Kerling district of tho Malay State of Selanger, terrorising the inhabitants, destroying plantations, and wrecking native huts. The elephant’s rage was aroused by a Malay, who shot it in the shoulder while it was grazing peacefully. It charged, and the Malay and his companions sent three more ill-aimed bullets into its body before they ran for safety. A Sakai tribesman was next sent to locate tho beast.

■The elephant ■waylaid the native in the jungle and charged. Ho leapt nimbly sideways, and the animal ran full force into a tree. Half one of its tusks remained embedded in the trunk.

Since then the elephant has descended on several villages, sometimes by day, sometimes by night, trumpeting in anger, and destroying everything in sight in its intent to be revenged on man.
