DEPARTMENT OF LABOUR GRANTS 20 PER CENT. SUBSIDY.

Advice was received by the Palmerston North City Council last night from tho Department of Labour, Employment Division, that it approved of a subsidy of 20 per cent, in respect ot tho Tiritea "water supply scheme, estimated to cost £112,144, and which would now be free of the conditions relating to the Kawau cut and the Kawau diversion mentioned in previous correspondence. On the motion of the Mayor (Mr. A. E. Mansford) it was decided to make application to the Loans Board for permission to raise the money, and to give public notice of intention to take a poll. In reply to an inquiry by the Mayor, tho city engineer (Mr. J. R. Hughes) stated that the estimated cost covered increases due to extra wages.
