Railcar Competes Willi City Buses

PROTEST PROM COUNCIL

The fact that the new rail car which leaves Palmerston North each evening about 8.45 p.m. for Woodville, was competing with the city’s municipal buses and taxis, was mentioned at last evening’s meeting of the Palmerston North City Council by iiho traffic manager (Mr. H. J. Smith.)

The council was informed that tho rail car was carrying passengers to Terrace End and even stopping at the Post Otiico crossing in order to pick them up. The rail car fare to Terraco End was 3d whereas the buses charged 4d.

Mr. Smith said he had mentioned tho matter to the chairman of No. 2 Licensing Authority, Mr. P. Skoglund, when the latter was in Palmerston North last week, and Mr. Skoglund had promised to mention the matter to the chairman of tho Railway Board. Mr. Smith suggested that the council also write to the General Manager of Railways asking that the practice bo discontinued and the council adopted the suggestion.

The attention of tho department is also to be drawn to tlio practice of tho rail car stopping on that side of tho Post Office crossing which keeps tho warning bells ringing. The effect is to hold up traffic unduly long.
